The Bateleur. So majestuous, so incredibly beautiful. Its name comes from the french word which means 'street performer'. Their colours make them very appealing subjects to paint. I've seen many during my travels to Southern Africa. It is unfortunately also the area where eagles and especially vultures are declining rapidly in numbers, many of which are already critically endangered. Large scale poisoning and illegal hunting for their body parts leave populations extremely vulnerable these days.

The proceeds of this artwork will go to the Endangered Wildlife Trust, a well-known, robust conservation organisation in South Africa, with a dedicated Birds of Prey Programme (SOAR) that is protecting Southern Africa's birds of prey like the Bateleur. The annual reports on their website give lots of information about this project, make sure to check it out!
