There are only 8 greate ape species or 'hominids' left on this planet, and humans are one of them. Another species is the Chimpanzee, our closest relative that shares 99% of its DNA sequence with us. They live in the rainforests of West and Central Africa, and are heavily endangered due to logging activities, wildlife trade and the bushmeat industry. Many chimpanzees end up in the pet industry and are abused.
To counter these horrific practices, the proceeds of this artwork will go to the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) who is supporting the Chimpanzee Conservation Center (CCC) in Guinea. They provide vital rescue, rehabilitation and release programmes for illegally trafficked chimps. DSWF itself is a UK-based non-profit organisation focusing on fundraising and hands-on conservation field projects with often limited funding. They also run law enforcement and raise education projects worldwide.
