New World birds like the Military Macaws occupy a tropical habitat range from Mexico to Bolivia, but are typically absent in some countries of Central-America. In Mexico, major suitable habitat has been lost already. The IUCN lists them as Vulnerable, and current population trends are decreasing, estimating their wild population numbers as low as 2000-7000 mature individuals (last assessed Oct-2016). Major threats to these birds are the illegal pet trade, logging & wood harvesting and large construction projects like quarrying and hydropower projects.
The proceeds of this artwork will go to the World Land Trust, a UK-based organisation that works together with several ground-based conservation partners to acquire land and keep biodiversity hotspots protected in a rapidly changing world. They currently have many projects running in Central- and South-America protecting the habitats of countless animals like the beautiful Military Macaws.
