Watercolor painting of a Scarlet Macaw nibbeling on a branch in the Central Americas. I was beyond excited when I saw my first Macaws in the wild in Costa Rica. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to see Macaws feeding on mud in the Amazon, or observe them flying across the rain forest canopy. Last year I finally got my chance. I was actually observing crocodiles on the Tarcoles river in Costa Rica when I heard strange sounds above my head. Three beautiful Scarlet Macaws flew across the bridge I was standing on, and after that day I was lucky to see many more. It is surely one of my most treasured bird observations yet.

The majority of the 18 living Macaw species are in a perilous situation due to the illegal pet trade and the rapid decline of their natural habitats. They are one of the most threathened birds in the world that often need extreme conservation intervention.

The proceeds of this fine art print will go to the Toucan Rescue Ranch, a non-profit organisation situated in Costa Rica, specializing in rescuing, rehabilitating and rewilding wounded birds and mammals like toucans, sloths, kinkajous and owls.
