The Courting Dance
The Courting Dance

Large watercolor impression of a Great Bird of Paradise. With this work I really tried to push the medium by keeping the flow of the paint very loose. The subject lends itself to it very well, because of the 'veil' of tail feathers which can especially be seen during a courting dance.
There are 42 different birds of paradise species, living in Papua New Guinea and Australia. They are characterised by incredibly lush and colorful feathers which are the result of extreme sexual selection because they evolved without natural enemies. Seeing the males perform mating dances for the females is a rare but extraordinary event.
The proceeds of this artwork will go to Indigenous Health Solutions , a non-profit organisation focused around protecting Papua New Guinea's indigenous people and the rainforest. By supporting this project, local communities and the immense biodiversity can continue to exist.
